Perhaps you are browsing around looking for information in Diablo 3 and have no idea what I am talking about. You may have never played Diablo 2 (at least during its peak popularity) and were only introduced to Blizzard games recently, maybe with World of Warcraft or Starcraft 2. If that is the case, you are in for a real treat. Allow me to explain.
Diablo 3 Builds Guide – What is it?
If you ever played Diablo 2, you know that coming up with wacky-yet-effective builds was one of the things that made the game so fun. A game like World of Warcraft is very tightly controlled, where classes are relegated to specific roles, builds, and gear. If any item or specialization becomes too powerful or used beyond its intended purposes, it gets nerfed.
For better or for worse, this is how many MMORPGs work. For example, when Rogues were able to stack so much Dodge and Parry gear that they were able to tank certain raid bosses, nerfs were applied to make sure that this did not happen again, as this threatens the tanking roll of Warriors, Paladins, and Druids.
In Diablo 2, you played in groups of 1-8 players max, and if you were really good you could solo the entire game. In Diablo 3, group sizes are cut even smaller: you only play in groups of 1 to 4 players. As a result, wacky Diablo 3 builds are not only enabled, but encouraged!
Examples of Diablo 3 Builds
While we do not know much about Diablo 3 just yet, I can give you plenty of examples from Diablo 2. Diablo 2 had 3 talent trees per class, just like WoW. However, every single talent in the game could be talented up to 20 points! You only got about 100-110 talent points for your entire character, so you could spread out your talents among many skills or specialize in just a few talents!
This led to all kinds of interesting builds, like the Thunderbolt Sorc, who specialized in nothing but Thunderbolt, Teleport, and Mana Shield. This character could barely beat any PvE monsters but was extremely difficult to beat in PvP! It really only had one counter: the Javazon. Javazons could easily collect some unusual equipment in game and lightning damage would actually heal them, making them immune to Thunderbolt Sorcerers. While Javazons could not really beat anything else, it was an amusing game to say the least.
Players often leveled up multiple characters on the same account and pulled each of them out when necessary. Nothing was bound to your character and there a literally millions of different items in game (stats on items are randomized, not static like in WoW), so players were able to come up with great builds.
While Diablo 3 may not use the same talent system, they are using the same loot system. As long as random loot exists we will be able to come up with a lot of great Diablo 3 builds. You will be able to collect gear that maximizes a certain stat and as a result makes your character powerful at certain objectives.
An example of how powerful items were in Diablo 2 can be exemplified in patch 1.08. Back at this point, The Frozen Throne had just come out, and almost no players could solo Baal, at least at a decent speed. Barbarians were okay at it as well, but if you drew the wrong notorious monsters then you could be in trouble. Paladins were not very good in patch 1.08 and could not handle much; they were not buffed until later patches. The only class that could reliably and quickly solo Baal was the Amazon.
The problem was that some monsters would be immune to all elements, and some monsers would be immune to physical damage. What you could do with an Amazon was equip a socketed bow with magic damage gems attached. This allowed you to deal elemental damage. You could take out all monsters but the one immune to physical quickly with your normal bow, then swap to your magic-damage set to take out the monster immune to physical.
Fortunately, in Diablo 3, no monster will be immune to all elements and roadblock players like in Diablo 2. This was announced on the website. However, I still think we will get a lot of great, crazy Diablo 3 builds which use gear to maximize certain stats.
